Trauma and abuse

The word Trauma is used to describe a severe shock that affects us deeply. The effects can be anxiety, sleeplessness, loss of self esteem and physical symptoms, obsessive negative thoughts, or flashbacks, sometimes so severe they are labelled as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
Many life events can cause such problems to varying degrees. Adult events, such as car accidents , bereavements, violent attacks or domestic abuse can have such effects.

Childhood neglect and abuse

Long early years of abuse, abandonment or even indifference can be as traumatic, sometimes more so than any adult horror. Someone who is not loved as a child or who is not made to feel such love will suffer serious effects from this and a child who has been emotionally, physically or sexually abused or even simply emotionally ignored can continue to suffer as much as any victim of torture.
People who have the misfortune to have had a traumatic childhood followed by traumatic adult experiences can suffer very severely.

Within the Trauma Foundation South West I work with asylum seekers and refugees who have been traumatized by war, oppression, displacement, or torture. I therefore have a lot of experience of extreme trauma.
However, I have found that many people in my private practice suffer from similar symptoms to varying degrees, so don't feel that the causes of your suffering are not extreme enough to ask for help. I stress again that an apparently all right childhood can still leave you traumatised.

The coping mechanisms you may have developed during a traumatic incident may be negatively impacting your life.
